Airavateswara Temple, Darasuram

The temple dedicated to Siva is referred to in the earlier inscriptions as Raja Rajeswaram. The temple considered to be one of the four stately temples of the Imperial Cholas was constructed by Raja Raja Chola II (CE 1160-1180). The temple is east oriented. It is covered by double prakara walls. The inner prakara with its double storeyed cloister comprises of main temple and a shrine for Chandesa. A separate shrine for Amman is on the north of the main temple. The main temple comprises of a garbhagriha, ardha-mandapa, mahamandapa, Agra mandapa and a pillared hall known as Rajagambiran mandapa. The dvaja sthamba, balipita and ornate Nandi mandapa are found outside the prakara wall. The vimana raised on bold adhisthana rises to an height of 83 ft. The five tala vimana is crowned by circular griva and sikhara. The Rajagambiran mandapa is artistically designed as chariot with hubs and spokes and is drawned by horses. The temple is a treasure house of sculptures. The upapita of main temple is decorated with panels depicting unique deeds of 63 Nayanmars. The pillars in the mukha mandapa are decorated with innumerable dance postures. Interestingly the sculptures on the gopura are labeled.
