Tirumalai Nayak Palace , Srivilliputhur

Srivillputtur is 77 kms west of Madurai and around 184 kms from Trichy. Srivillputtur derived its name from sri (holy), Villi (bow man), puthu (new) and ur(palace) meaning holy bow man’s new place. This the birth place of Andal, a well-known vaishnavaite saint.  The Nayaks of Madurai ruled this Kingdom from 1545 until the 1740s and Thirumalai Nayak (1623-1659) was one of their greatest kings notable for various buildings in and around Madurai. The palace was built by Tirumalai Nayaka of Madurai (1623-59). Thirumalai Nayak Palace is a 17th-century palace erected in 1636 CE by King Tirumala Nayaka, a king of Madurai’s Nayaka dynasty who ruled Madurai from 1623 to 1659, in the city of Madurai, India. The palace was built by Tirumalai Nayaka of Madurai (1623-59). It served as his place of residence during his stay at Srivilliputtur when he came to pay his obeisance to the presiding deity. The structure is a moderate when compared to his grand palace at Madurai. There are two portions in this palace; one might be his residence and other the audience hall.

The residential chamber is an octagonal structure supported by 8 arches. The edge of the arches has stucco floral designs. Ornamental stucco brackets with floral designs are also noticed. The other structure has vaulted roof and is supported with ten massive pillars and arches. The coat of arms of Queen Victoria has also been painted here.
